Japanese Cedar Hot Tub/Ofuro by Dovetail

It’s fair to say that the Japanese know quite a bit about hot tub dos and don’ts. While hot water therapy did nor originate in Japan, their first hot spring use (early 700s CE) triggered a devotion to hot water soaking tubs — ofuros — that continues to this day.

In addition to loving warm water soaks, the Japanese practice “kakeyu,” or the cleaning of one’s body thoroughly with very warm water before entering a hot spring or public bath, etc.

“Not only does pre-washing get rid of dirt and sweat before getting into your clean hot tub,” says our own Bill Renter, “but it also helps you acclimatize yourself to the warm temperature of the portable spa.”

Showering Before Getting In a Hot Tub

Showering Before Getting In a Hot Tub

Whether or not it’s your own hot tub you and family members use, or whether you enjoy someone else’s spa, it’s a thoughtful gesture to shower before stepping in.

Tip: Showering with hot water will remove most contaminates from your body, including dead skin cells and personal care products. This reduces the work required of your spa filter and water care system. And like the Japanese “kakeyu” pre-soak wash, this pre-cleansing doesn’t require soap.

It’s helpful to consider that hot tubs are small, very small, pools of water. And just two people in one is like having a couple of hundred in a swimming pool, say experts at Swim University.

“Taking a shower first will keep your hot tub cleaner for longer and hopefully will require less chemicals,” says Bill. “Also, if there’s a strong smell of chemicals when you’re in your hot tub, it’s because they’re at work destroying contaminants. The chemical smell should be less if you get in the hot tub already clean.”
